My Philosophy On Headshots

The most important thing about a headshot is that it captures the authentic you. When you look at the image I create, it must feel that I have captured who you really are and how you want people to see you.

My camera framing tends to be very tight on the face as I want to bring you forward to the viewer. I have never been a fan of the waist-up headshots with lots of room above a subject because it does not feel personal.

This is a simple process and I will make it fun. I know that having a camera pointed at you can be intimidating. I will ask that you focus on a highlight on the camera lens and forget about everything else for just a bit. I will work with your body posture along with the position of your head to bring out your best side. I am also going to have to take lots of deep breaths to both change your body posture and to make sure you continue to breathe; it’s important.

BACKGROUNDS

Solid Colors - I keep it simple shooting on either a WHITE or BLACK background. This approach allows for the subject to really shine while the clean backgrounds are timeless and go with any website or design.

Environmental (Location Only) - I will bring white or black solid backgrounds to your location.

CLOTHING

Keeping with my theme of capturing the authentic you, please dress how you wish to be seen and what feels appropriate for your natural presentation. Everything from a simple clean t-shirt to a suit and tie can work for your headshot. The more comfortable and natural you are, the more that will translate into the final image.

I do have a few rules to follow:

• Please avoid busy patters and loud colors as they are a visual distraction. Neutral tones are always the best choice as it keeps the focus on your face.

• Jewelry should be kept to a minimum by wearing smaller earrings and a simple necklace.

 • Since my camera framing tends to be pretty tight, please avoid plunging    necklines and strapless tops.

• Bring a few changes of clothing. I am happy to take a look at options to recommend what I think will look best. And we can certainly change outfits during your session.

• If you are going to wear a suit and tie, please bring a few ties and a couple of different jackets. A light blue shirt tends to photograph better than pure white but I can always make a white shirt work.

• If you wear glasses, they have to be clean and smudge free. Non-reflective glasses are far and away the best choice. Please do not wear blue light blocking glasses as they change the color of your skin around the eyes.

MAKE UP

My philosophy on this is rather simple in that I believe most women are very comfortable doing their own makeup. You should appear natural and who you are on a daily basis so the makeup should remain simple and natural.

If you desire to have a makeup artist prepare you for the headshot, I am happy to make recommendations. I request that you use one of my approved makeup artist who understands my lighting and my desired look. But again, this is only if you choose to work with a makeup artist as I do not feel it is required.

Almost everyone gets a bit of powder during the shoot. I have put powder on men and women for decades including a former US President, so please have confidence that I won’t lead you astray here. This includes men: you are gonna get powder by Rob in the studio. Yep it’s true, because all skin has a bit of natural oil that can shine under lights. A bit of powder will knock that down and we won’t tell anyone you wore makeup.

Hair

I ask that everyone come in with their hair ready the way you would like to present yourself. I want your hair in your pictures to be as close as possible to the way you look on a "good hair day". Like everything else, I am going for the natural look with your hair.

Please do not get your haircut the day before a headshot. Fresh cuts look a bit too fresh. Hair looks far more natural about ten days to two weeks after a cut so please plan accordingly.

PROOFING

During the session, I will review the images with you and help your narrow the options to a grouping of the best shots. And to ensure you are happy with the results before waling out the door.

The selected images will be placed into an online gallery where you will have the opportunity to review and make your final choices. You are free to share the proofing gallery with a spouse, friend or colleagues if you desire additional opinions. Once your selections have been made, my system will notify me of your choices and the retouching process will begin.

RETOUCHING

I keep the retouching simple and natural. The final images have to be the authentic “you” so I never remove birthmarks, moles or permanent blemishes unless requested. Retouching will consist of color grade, removal minor blemishes or skin flaws, removal stay hairs and softening character lines if needed.

I have often been asked, “can you make me look ten years younger?” The answer is yes; but I won’t. I firmly believe that a great headshot is a true representation of who you are, no matter the age.

Each additional photo you decide to purchase is $50. You can purchase as many retouched photos as you like which puts you in control of your final price. I will keep original files for 1 year, so you can always come back for more images later. Group Rate includes one retouched image per person.

DELIVERY

After retouching is complete, you will receive a link to download your retouched images along with the final invoice.

You'll receive three file sizes for each retouched photo:

Small - Optimized for use online with social media and similar websites.

Large - Full resolution perfect for printed advertising materials, comp cards, and wall displays. You can also downsize this image for use in just about any media.

I am happy to accommodate specific photo requirements. Just provide the pixel dimensions needed, and it will be included with your final delivery.

LOCATION

Shooting on location adds time for packing gear, traveling to the location and setting up the mobile studio. As a result we typically only offer location sessions for groups of three or more and build a location fee into the price.
